Anyone can throw the Summit Racing catalog at a car and make it cool by most peoples’ standards. The same thing goes with a 1000+ HP crate motor or a rocket bunny kit. This stuff just doesn’t interest me anymore.
You see, I find that haggard and hack-ass engineering is more important than impressing the casual car-person. Take Sloppy Mechanics’ Colorado, pictured above. This is a fleet-spec compact truck with an unopened junkyard 6.0 with a huge turbo, and a junkyard Ford 8.8” rear end. It’s currently pushing 700 RWHP. The total build cost including the purchase price of the truck is under $10k. It’s ingenuity like this that gets my heart beating. Taking an unproven idea and turning it up to eleven. Pushing the envelope with creative and ragged workarounds. Engine doesn’t fit under the hood? Time to break out the angle grinder. Tires too wide for the car? Time to make some fender flares out of cheap fiberglass. Need more aero? Make your own underbody panels. Need more power? Why not try an eBay turbo? The possibilities are endless if you get your mind into the gutter. Nothing’s sacred, and it doesn’t have to be anywhere near perfect. It’s time to take a look at your car, and say “How can I improve this on the cheap?” Make things with your own two hands, and don’t be afraid to cut things up in order to achieve your crazy dream. Get out there, and get wrenching.

Need more aero? Make your own underbody panels.
Directions unclear, spent entire budget on CFD software and wind tunnel time.

I’m talking about using some mathematic formulas to make your car more aerodynamic. Hypermilers have been doing it for years.

I completely agree and that’s why I love Roadkill. Some of the stance guys still do some stuff like this. They cut out their floors to go lower. They’re not afraid of a few scratches.

Unrelated, but I’ll take this opportunity to gawk at those ungodly things that enter the World Time Attack Challenge.
More of a hillclimber, but I just adore the Lancia Delta LaSupra, particularly in Joy of Machine livery.

Yes, I am tired of the same ol same ol. However I am still interested in stuff like Gas Monkey and Roadkill. The Gas Monkey stuff is fairly mainstream but they do it with a twist.

I agree with you. “Good enough” car builds/haggard garage builds are much better than “My Carmax build where I’m getting all my parts from the dealership”. I’d prefer “oh fuck we have to cut that, whatever”

I don’t have time for that nonsense anymore. Hacked together cars with junkyard parts are massive time sinks. They’re awesome, I appreciate the builds, and they were fun when I had the time...just cannot do it anymore.

I stuck motorcycle carbs on a toyota truck engine in a 70’s Toyota Celica. Yeah, I had to have the manifold custom made, but does that count?

Some people are great at this. and the car is not a complete butcher job.
I do not care for the people who do “theme builds” and it’s really just an excuse to do lazy hack ass work. Tell me again about how compression fittings on brake line is “cool”, etc.
Stuff like the W2W Nova, Coupe de Kill, etc gets me going.

That counts. It’s a crazy idea that needed to be pulled off.

Yes, please. Been to many a car show and they can get stale quick without a little something to mix things up.
